Well the decision has been made and although it clearly hurts the kid's in single A and the sport of wrestling in VA..."thus saith the VHSL". We will have a state tournament this year for which I am thankful. We will have 15 byes in the state tournament with wrestlers qualifying for state and receiving a medal in state without winning a match. Not good.
The response is that there is just not enough time to implement the changes. I have called around and find out that the proposal to fill the brackets at state has been recommended over and over again. For many years. The response has been we will look at it for next year.
Well it is next year again and because no one seems to care, or just too busy, or wrestling, or Single A wrestling just isn't that important... And who hurts from this disregard? The kids, the sport, the schools, the coaches, and yes even VHSL. Just spoke with a coach who has 3 wrestlers who placed 3rd at regions this year. 2 had been multiple state qualifiers and one had place all 3 years at state. When offered the opportunity to go to state this year as alternates they all replied...No Way!!! They perceive that no one at VHSL really has there best interest in mind.
Big shout out to Delegate Israel O'Quinn who in the midst of a busy legislative session took the time to call VHSL and advocate for our kids.
Will we wait until it is too late again next year to address issues that are preventable and predictable and need to be addressed for the good of the sport?
Your answer is as good as mine.

Adding to my post.
Spoke with a good friend who tells me VHSL is short handed and that it is remarkable that we are having a season this year. Teams in Northern VA were in flux, on then off, yes and then no, so it was hard to predict. My apologies to those at VHSL if I have made wrong assumptions. This year was one of a kind we hope... but we never know. We should work on definite plans to fill vacancies in the future. Please.

Should have combined classes this year to three or God forbid one. Though VHSL loves giving out those little medals to everyone who ever participated.

A lot of wrestlers won't compete at Super States. Even the elite / year round wrestlers. It is not school affiliated and doesn't have much luster. The better competition is at NHSCA and other tournaments.
