Im a Grundy fan but now its looking like they are loving the 6 class system and the participation trophies it brings. Grundy doesn’t control the class they wrestle in. Let’s stop with the nonsense. The kids that won a state title earned it and their efforts shouldn’t be ridiculed or minimized because us as fan’s would like to see a 1 class tournament.

Region A isn't the only region against half states or Super Regions. At least two from Region C do not want realignment, half states/Super Regions. As for which classification a school should be in, that talk is irrelevant since Grundy competes at a much higher level than most all year anyway. If the VH$L wants to change, then address it in other sports too. You have LCA as an active recruiting semiprivate competing against public schools in all sports, John Marshall a travel basketball powerhouse playing 2A and everyone in SWVA dead horse Riverheads likely heading back to Class 1 after the new attendance numbers come out. Make it like European soccer where you move up or down for the post season depending on the previous 3 years performance overall and in post season. I wouldn't make it a one off because a blind hog can find an acorn every once and awhile.
Every year people get worked up during football, basketball and wrestling season when there are a number of other sports connected to decisions made to accommodate the dominance of certain schools. Can't we all just agree Grundy is a wrestling standard in VA currently and the prize any aspiring program wants to take a win over. Tons of respect for their kids, coaches and fans. I for one hope my son gets a shot at them in whichever division they are in by the time he gets to HS. You only truly win by beating those you arent suppose to............

From what I can see Grundy has a fantastic wrestling culture and produces some very talented wrestlers year after year.
Any good program is going to attract wrestlers to that school. I personally feel that moving to a school with a good program is more honest and honorable than doing a holdback. Holdbacks aren't all necessarily bad, I had good friends of mine that redshirted their freshman year. I feel alot of holdbacks are motivated by wrestling dad's with unrealistic expectations.
Okay, back to Grundy. I think alot of the hate comes from the eastern side of the state. I know Grundy wrestled Powerade and VA duals but you rarely see Grundy wrestlers at tournaments like I64, NHSCAs, a super 32 qualifier, or even Super States? Heck out of the few Grundy wrestlers that wrestled at VAWA, most had a DNP next to their name.
Grundy is a great team and wins with class, but they are also in the easiest class in the state. I personally think they would be competitive in any class. Not dominant, but competitive. They have no obligation to show up to the big tournaments in the eastern side of the state to prove anything, but until they do, I expect alot of hate and speculation that they just aren't as good as the big schools.

Grundy does go to NHSCA Nationals Wyatt Bush won it and was second last year. However, they do not spend the majority of their schedule in eastern Va. it’s a 6-8 hour drive when they already see the top teams at the Va Duals. They finished top 30 in the Powerade (ahead of Staunton River). As for the other tournaments you mentioned, they aren’t worth the trip. Grundy will compete against the top teams in the state and country during the season and in the postseason, they compete on a level playing field based on enrollment. How many teams could compete if they only had 350 kids to draw from? I think the hate comes from the big schools who have no excuses for losing to a class 1 team. They have 2x-6x the enrollment and can’t explain the little guy being in the mix. I’d say they all want Grundy in a bigger division to help their own ego more than anything else. Grundy is in the midst of a great group of wrestlers. Class 1 also had the perfect storm with graduation and riverheads and Lebanon going up really opened up the tournament for the Grundy kids. I just think when you win people complain. Nobody hates on the people who lose.

But, the only way to test yourself in VA is to wrestle Great Bridge. 22 years of consistent championships, the most accomplished coach in the state who coached in Div1, a stacked roster year after year, and loads of state champs. Great Bridge is the elephant in the room.

When you win you get noticed by the competition. But go hang around the parents on a loosing team. Lol We travel to the east to see new, tough competition with a lot of match ups. It is tough but if you don't think Grundy would hang I don't think you are watching close enough.
