Region D represented 20 of 28 state finalists. Region C had 8. Both are above the expected 7.

From this , I’d like to point out a few disparities in class 1. First, I think this shows how much losing riverheads to class 2 hurts the level of competition in class 1. Many of the past couple of years, class 1 has been tougher than class 2 in the top 3. I think it also shows the western logjam in class 1.
Region A-Chinoteague, Essex, King and Queen, Lancaster, Matthews, Middlesex, Northampton, Northumberland, Westmoreland-9
Region B- Buffalo Gap, Cumberland, Franklin, Rappahannock Co -4
Region C- Auburn, Bath Co, East Montgomery, Fort Chiswell, Galax, George Wythe, Grayson Co, Giles, Parry McCleur-9
Region D-Castlewood, Chilhowie, Eastside, Grundy, Holston, Honaker, JI Burton, Northwood, Patrick Henry (GS), Rural Retreat, Thomas Walker -11
If you move Bath and Parry McCleur to B and Rural Retreat and Chilhowie to C and Lancaster to B, then you have A-8 B-7 C-9 and D-9. That’s more balanced. I’d love to see the return of half state/super regions, but I know certain regions prefer the easy path.

There needs to be a change, moving some teams seems like the easier option. This breakdown definitely shows change is needed. It also shows that regions c and d have some great teams once again.

In region A is tough to split up because most of the schools are close by with the exception of Northampton and chincoteague. Westmoreland and Mathews being the furthest from each other at about an hour and a half. Northampton is closer to Franklin than the rest of region A but still 2 plus hours from the rest of region B. Honestly going back to the super regionals would be best for everyone. Split the regions into two as best as they can take the top 4 and have an 8 man state tournament. The 1A championship won’t be as watered down as some think and still makes it a challenge to win a state title plus a regional championship will mean something again. It will never be perfect as Virginia is a long state and travel won’t be easy for some teams.
