VHSL Class 1 State Predictions

Here's some of my predictions for Class 1! Congrats to all the State Qualifiers!

Finals: Anders GC vs. Castellanos WHS
Champ: Anders GC
Darkhorse: Bear RR
Key Matchup: Semis Anders GC vs. Bear RR

I think Anders is the front runner at 106. He has head to head wins over a couple of other qualifiers including a 3-0 decision over Bear.

Finals: Looney GR vs. Gibson RR
Champ: Gibson RR
Darkhorse: Porter GC
Key Matchup: Semis Looney GR vs. Porter GC

Gibson & Looney have split 2 matchups in the regular season. Both won by 1 point. I think Gibson comes out on top in the rubber match! Either way I expect to see fireworks with this one.

Finals: Hall GR vs. Crewey RR
Champ: Hall GR
Darkhorse: Thompson GC
Key Matchup: Semis Hall GR vs. Thompson GC

Hall vs. Thompson potential semis matchup could be a good one to watch for. Hall returning champ (2A 106 in 2022) and Thompson has some quality wins under his belt.

Finals: Rodriguez GC vs. Rose RR
Champ: Rodriguez GC
Darkhorse: Widener CH
Key Matchup: Widener CH vs. Rodriguez GC 

This weight could be interesting. I think it is a toss up on who comes out on the lower side of the bracket! Looking forward to this one.

Finals: Coleman GR vs. Buchanan HOL
Champ: Coleman GR
Darkhorse: Mitchell GC
Key Matchup: Quarters Buchanan HOL vs. Mitchell GC 

Big quarters match in this weight. I do not believe these two have met before.

Finals: Castle CW vs. Penwright RR
Champ: Penwright RR
Darkhorse: Pittman CUMB
Key Matchup: Semis Pittman CUMB vs. Penwright RR

A tough weight to call. Penwright and Castle meet in another rubber match. But Penwright could see Pittman in the semis. Do not know a lot about him, but a senior with that record is likely going to make for a good matchup!

Griffey is going to be tough to beat. He is looking tough!

I think Gordon takes this one for his 2nd title. Going to have some tough matchups the whole tournament tho!

Deel and Lorenz meeting in the finals would be fun to watch. But both semis for this weight will be battles!

I think the senior from Mathews gets it done. I do not think Stroupe and Melton have met this season. Big match for team points!

A very interesting weight. Stanley has wrestled solid in the postseason. I finally got a chance to watch Smith from Giles, he looks strong. Giles gets their first ever finalist but Stanley gets him in a close one.

I think Ashworth gets back to the finals but Looney pulls it off in a great match.

Key Matchup: Quarters Doss CH vs. Espinoza GX

Bush's weight to lose. This guy is the real deal. Will be interesting to see who punches through to the finals on the lower side.

Finals: Shelton GR vs. Mabry FC
Champ: Shelton GR
Darkhorse: Wilder BG
Key Matchup: Semis Mabry FC vs. Suarez NH

If we see this matchup in the finals, it will be two very athletic heavy weights going at it. I believe Shelton won the matchup at Agie Skeens earlier in the year.
