I have a 12U (Born 2012-2013) walking around at ~54 lbs. The lowest weight class for 12U is 58lbs (USA weights). We’ve traveled a lot this year and found that there are a lot of 10-11 year olds that weigh 52-54lbs. I’m wondering if there are any other coaches/parents with some 12U wrestlers that are too small for 58lbs. And, are you interested in trying to get a lower weight class added for state?

I would not add another weight class. While youth and middle school wrestling weight classes are not regulated by NFHS, High School is, and the lowest weight any state can have is 106. If a 12 year old is only weighing 54-58, it may be tough to grow to 106 by freshman year.
I would encourage parents in this situation to find a good nutrition and workout plan to help them.
Look for tournaments using Madison weights in the mean time.

You make a decent point about HS weights…and I agree with trying to gain weight (we’re working on that)… But, one thing - just so you’re aware 12U doesn’t mean 12 years old with USA Wrestling Categories. He’s 10. He can’t wrestle 10U because he is not 9…I know it’s a little confusing but that’s how it works. There have been years where VAWA added lower weight classes for this very reason. That’s why I asked the question - to find out if there were enough kids like my son to take it to VAWA as a request. *As I mentioned in my original post, we have competed a lot this year and found many tournaments with weight classes lower than 58 for his age group.

www.usawmembership.com/age_group_weight_chartI understand. Depending on birth month, a wrestler in 12U could be 10-12. It is unfortunate if your wrestler turns 11 after the season. Birth month and it's affect on sports is talked about in the book "Outliers" by Malcom Gladwell as it relates to hockey. I highly recommend it.
