Alot of discussion about changing the number of classes. Here are some pros and cons:
Pros for change Iron sharpens Iron State title/placement means more to D1 recruiters Cons Small schools with gaps in their lineup will find it difficult to grow
Pros to keep it as is Easier for small schools to grow the sport and recruit more wrestlers More State title/placers may help kids get noticed by D2, D3, and NAIA recruiters Non collegiate level wrestlers have a better highschool wrestling experience
In short I feel keeping it as is favors small teams with holes in their lineup and changing it favors elite individual wrestlers and good wrestlers who never see tough competition until Regionals or State. Cons Elite wrestlers will continue to have to wrestle other tournaments to find greater competition and strengthen their resume for recruiters
What else am I missing?

Go to 3 or 4 classes and 16 wrestler brackets for all classes. Private stays private so they are another class.

If it were to drop down to 3 or 4 classes, then the regions were be much larger. So, we would take the top-6 for each region and it will make 24-man brackets. That would make the state tournament much more difficult/competitive. This is only if that were to happen and the state makes the regions more geographically even or even numerically somewhat balanced.

Why is everyone afraid to include private schools? Many states do.

Why is everyone afraid to include private schools? Many states do. Scared of competition Not scared but looking for fair. There’s a reason in NJ Blair Academy isn’t in there individual state or team tournament with the public schools…

Private schools follow different eligibility requirements than the public schools. If they want to follow VHSL eligibility requirement, I don't think anyone would have issue with them being in the same pool. I wouldn't be against VA going to one class for all individual sports... I am probably in the minority on that... But I would like to see it get back to at least the 3 classes and bring district tournaments back... and the state dual team tournament.

VISAA follows VHSL rules for eligibility. Only exception (as far as I know) is a transfer who doesn't pass placement testing and gets reclassed.
