Happy New Year!
I had three rankings related resolutions this year:
1- Get these out before the All Class rankings were updated . . . oops;
2- Not to overexplain the rankings . . . oops;
3- And I forget the third one, so I will count this as a win.
Anyways, with the first month of the season in the books, here is an expanded update to my preseason rankings from last month, with the usual caveats about coaches failing to put results into Track and wrestlers shifting weights over the course of the season. Next update will be at the end of the month before we head into the postseason. Cheers, and see you matside.
106 lbs
1. Carter Shin, Chantilly
2. Jonathan French, Thomas Jefferson
3. Peyton Van Hoven, Mountain View
4. Christian Rojas, Hayfield
5. Royce Wetzler, Cosby
6. Troy Kang, Robinson
7. Adam Husseini, West Springfield
8. Basleale Mulugeta, Washington-Liberty
Note: With Caden Smith apparently staying at 113 (see below), Shin becomes the clear favorite, although French (who owns a head-to-head win over Van Hoven) deserves credit for having made serious strides since last season.
Ranker’s Dilemna #1: How to handle an outlier loss -- Rojas finished 2nd at the NOVA Classic and 3rd at Battle of the Bridge, yet dropped a dual match to Husseini (7th at NOVA). Although I generally think head-to-head results should be a primary determinant of rankings (i.e. if we go strictly on the body of their career results, why wrestle matches at all?), here I think their results against a common field at NOVA offsets a one-point loss. Discuss . . .
Ranker’s Dilemna #2: How to rank an undefeated freshman who hasn’t necessarily beaten any ranked or common opponents yet -- I noted Wetzler's resume in last month's preseason rankings, and he has since gone on to win the Greg Stanley, the Titan's Invitational, and the Duman Toys-for-Tots Invitational. Clearly, he is very good and will be a contender at States. Yet as far as I can tell, in all those tournaments he still hasn't wrestled a single state qualifier, 6A regional placer, or wrestler who has beaten either of those to provide a firmer comparison. Consequently, I'm placing him behind Rojas (who has a few "significant" wins) and ahead of Kang, who won the Cavalier Classic and has a win over Husseini, but has an in-state loss.
113 lbs
1. Caden Smith, Robinson
2. Logan Katz, Battlefield
3. Brandon Cynar, Western Branch
4. Edwin Gonzalez, Woodbridge
5. Cambyses Khani, Yorktown
6. Michael Santos, Chantilly
7. Shan Kolb, Edison
8. Tyler Gutschmidt, Colgan
Note: I honestly didn't think Smith would stay at 113, as he has always been undersized for 106lbs (competing regionally and at Fargo at 100lbs), but the results speak for themselves, and he is the #1 ahead of Katz, who he defeated in the 6A 106lb championships last year. Brandon Cynar jumps into the rankings with tourney wins at the Warrior Stampede and King of Beasts (and 3rd at the Bridge, where his only loss of the season so far was to returning 4A champ Waylon Rogers).
Ranker's Dilemna #3: Triangular results - Khani defeated Kolb at NOVA; Kolb defeated Gonzalez at NOVA; Gonzalez defeated Khani at the Bridge; who should be ranked higher? (Khani placed 5th last season; Kolb missed the postseason with an injury, and Gonzalez is a freshman). I ended up going with Gonzalez, as his pin of Khani would give him 1st if this were a round robin. (Gonzalez finished 2nd at Bridge, 6th at NOVA, and 5th at King of the Rock, so is clearly a wrestler to watch). If we take out Gonzalez, then Khani's H2H win places him ahead of Kolb, and I rate Santos ahead of Kolb due to his higher finish at the Pat Dulaney (1st v. 3rd, albeit no H2H). Either way, this will be a very competitive weight going forward.
120 lbs
1. Ezekiel Keel, Chantilly
2. Benjamin Levy, Marshall
3. David Dight, Edison
4. Trevor Nielsen, Colonial Forge
5. Darren Hicks, West Springfield
6. Ryan Saunders, Battlefield
7. Sean Goffigan, Woodbridge
8. Anthony Pough, Robinson
Note: Hopefully we see Keel and Levy square off at the Joe Verciglio this weekend, as Levy looked pretty dominant major decisioning Dight in the NOVA finals . . . actually, we could see Keel, Levy, Hicks (who moved down from 126 to 120 for the Bridge), Saunders, Pough, '22 VISSA state placer Lidgard (now at Grassfield), Lim, and Aidan Shufelt (of 5A Independence, who placed 3rd in New York States last year and beat Levy at Beast of the East) in the same bracket. . .
126lbs
1. Nicholas Sanders, Mountain View
2. Jerry Simon, Deep Run
3. Ben Rubin, Thomas Jefferson
4. Jacob Daly, McLean
5. Brendan Sholders, Westfield
6. Chase Beltz, Brooke Point
7. Cole Butler, Western Branch
8. Jeremiah Chinyere-Okiyi, Potomac
Notes: Sanders pinned Simon at Richmond Invitational and moves into the top spot. Meanwhile, Rubin won the NOVA Classic at 132 but has since moved down to 126lbs and Daly – who didn’t qualify for States last year – has beaten returning state placers Sholders (twice) and Beltz.
132lbs
1. Tristan Corbin, Robinson
2. Eli Cramer, Cosby
3. Carson Easlick, Westfield
4. Mason Knight, Mountain View
5. Nick Moore, Grassfield
6. Luis Malave, Marshall
7. Ty Beyer, Freedom-South Riding
8. Nathan Aloi, Stafford
MIA: I haven’t seen any results from Hayato Otero (Landstown) yet this season, who was 3rd at 6A States last season.
Notes: Cramer bumped up to win Toys for Tots on the 21st, so for now we’ll keep him here. I have him behind Corbin based on off-season/out-of-state wins, but they could just as easily be co-number ones, and with five championships under their belt they’d make a great final at States (which guarantees a jinx of them meeting in the semis . . .); Knight would serve as another example of the dilemma of how to rank out-of-state transfers -- he was a regional champion in Texas last year -- but placed higher than Moore at the Richmond Invitational, giving us a semi-direct means of comparison for now; After the top six things are a bit more muddled, with about 4-6 wrestlers meriting consideration, so look for more changes here.
138lbs
1. Geoffrey Whelan, Mountain View
2. Michael Phoutasen, Landstown
3. Nate Moore, Grassfield
4. Benjamin Aguilar, Brooke Point
5. Matthew Arndt, Battlefield
6. Stefan Hernandez, Centreville
7. Carl Sandberg, Colonial Forge
8. Aiden Sanders, South Lakes
Note: 138 is probably the deepest weight class in 6A, with SIX returning state placers (Hernandez 3x) and two more wrestlers who were a match away from placing in 2023; Arndt won Battle at the Bridge, but his teammate Carter Harris wasn’t in lineup, so unlike Cramer I’m treating this as just a holiday bump up (Lord knows I moved up a weight class myself . . .) rather than a permanent lineup change, but will keep an eye on Battlefield’s lineup moving forward.
144lbs
1. Tyler Traves, Mountain View
2. Jayden Loveranes, South Lakes
3. Carter Harris, Battlefield
4. Matt Gashi-Brito, Fairfax
5. Adonis Iparagguire, Chantilly
6. William Etu, Stafford
7. Pierre Portes, Western Branch
8. Wiley Harris, C.D. Hylton
Notes: Again, the transitive property fails us here on head-to-heads, as Harris beat Etu at the Bridge, Etu came from behind to pin Portes, who has an offseason win over Harris. I give the edge to Etu for now given that he had the most wins at States last year (2, compared to Portes’ 1 and Harris’ 0) and ended up placing higher at the Bridge in 3rd (vs. Harris’ 5th and Portes 7th).
150lbs
1. Chase Van Hoven, Brooke Point
2. Mattox Allen, Grassfield
3. Brady Calderwood, Herndon
4. Colin Jackson, Edison
5. Brandon Kiraly, Mountain View
6. Monte Sanchez, C.D. Hylton
7. Jeremiah Segraves, West Potomac
8. Michael Guidice, Deep Run
Ranker’s Dilemma #4: How to weigh split results – Kiraly tech falled Segraves at the NOVA Classic, but Segraves got revenge with a major decision over Kiraly at the Bridge . . . which counts more? Normally I'd be inclined to go with the most recent result -- after all, if we were doing bi-weekly rankings, the Dec. 3rd rankings would reflect NOVA, and the Dec. 31st rankings would reverse this -- but throw in Sanchez (who beat Segraves but lost to Kiraly at the Bridge) and you have another problematic transitive triangle. In the end I'm giving Kiraly the nod, as he is 2-1 within the round robin, Sanchez is 1-1, and Segraves is 1-2, but obviously any one of them is capable of placing at States (and it isn’t a given that Kiraly will keep the lineup slot over teammate Dustin Kohn, who travelled with Mountain View to compete in the Mustang Classic in NJ and who also beat Segraves at NOVA). )
157lbs
1. Benjamin Weader, Chantilly
2. Blake Jones, Mountain View
3. Shane Givens, Highland Springs
4. Alek Martinez, Oakton
5. Jacob Charlesworth, Lake Braddock
6. Keegan Pado, Battlefield
7. Derek Swensen, Western Branch
8. Neil Alleman, Yorktown
Note: Jones sees his first action of the season (at least as far as I can tell from Track results. . .) winning Battle at the Bridge. After the top 2, this weigh class is pretty wide open, with 4 wrestlers from 6-9 whose H2H results form a daisy chain loop, so I’m largely relying on tournament placings here.
165lbs
1. Ryan Ronsckvitz, Langley
2. Gabriel Cortes, Mountain View
3. Augustus Fleming, Brooke Point
4. Nana Utsey, Glen Allen
5. Kyle Swensen, Western Branch
6. Jake Brubaker, Westfield
7. Ali Khawaja, Fairfax
8. Patrick Gordon, Freedom-South Riding
Note: Both Cortes and Fleming have wins over Utsey, while Ronsckvitz has a win over Fleming to earn the #1 spot for now.
175lbs
1. Lucas Matheny, Lake Braddock
2. Gavin Whiteside, South County
3. Ryan Gioffre, Battlefield
4. Nicolas Rosado, Glen Allen
5. Mohammad Elhajj, Fairfax
6. Michael Rivetti, Chantilly
7. Jalal Haidari, John Lewis
8. Bryce Flanders, Colgan
Note: As things currently stand, there isn’t a single returning state placer in this weight class. Matheny came a match away from placing last season and won the Damascus Holiday Classic in MD over break, so gets the #1 for now. But this will likely be a fairly wide open class come States.
190lbs
1. Corey Bell, Mountain View
2. Joshua Villatoro, Brooke Point
3. Ethan Osburn, Hayfield
4. Ryan Matheny, Lake Braddock
5. William Lewey, McLean
6. Jon DeMarco, Gainseville
7. Ethan Lebkisher, Marshall
8. Brendan Partridge, Westfield
Ranker’s Dilemma #5: How to Handle an Outlier Loss, Part II – Joshua Villatoro is a first-year starter (no shame there, as he was behind last year’s 5A State Champ on Brooke Point’s depth chart) yet pinned returning State Champ Bell in -- I think -- their first meeting. Does this make him #1? I swear, I believe H2H results should outweigh “history of accomplishment” arguments (i.e. the great Vafiadis/Hipolito debate from a few years ago), but in this case Bell was winning the match when Villatoro pinned him, so it is possible he was just caught. Consequently, like Doc Holiday, my hypocrisy knows no bounds and I’m keeping Bell #1 for now . . . but jumping Villatoro to #2 right behind him.
Note: Osburn beat both Lewey and returning state placer DeMarco at Battle of the Bridge, and bumped up to beat Emory Fedd 5-2 in a dual at 215.
215lbs
1. Harry Maltese, Fairfax
2. Sirhoun Pirhoun, Marshall
3. Sean Pena, Centreville
4. Joseph Hayden, Forest Park
5. Cole Leinberger, Thomas Dale
6. Emory Fedd, Mount Vernon
7. Rafael Pena, W.T. Woodson
8. Temuulen Myagmarjargal, Freedom-South Riding
MIA: I haven’t seen any results yet this season for Trent Pane (Lake Braddock), last year’s State runner-up at 215. If you're still with me, I could go into a long explanation of rankings 5-8, but will hold off unless somebody comments/critiques.
285lbs
1. James Bland, Cosby
2. Nasir Edmonds, Landstown
3. Joseph Lubinskas, Battlefield
4. Juelz Peters, Alexandria City
5. John Drury, McLean
6. Edgar Lagos Flores, John Lewis
7. Isaiah Peters, Chantilly
8. Charles Beamon, Westfield
MIA: Clay Bachman (Mountain View), 3rd in 5A last season and 8th at NHSCA. Shame if he doesn't wrestle, as I think Mountain View has a chance to be good this year . . .
TEAM (Tournament)
1. Mountain View, 95pts
2. Chantilly, 52
3. Battlefield, 44
4. Brooke Point, 42
5. Robinson, 31
6. Cosby, 28
7t. Lake Braddock, 25
7t. Fairfax, 25
9. Marshall, 23
10. Grassfield, 22
Note: Mountain View still looks like they’ll run away with States. Although Battlefield might have the broad talent to defeat them in a dual meet, Chantilly’s top-level talent (and the possibility that I’m underrating Santos at 113) make them the second best tournament team in 6A, with Brooke Point close behind on both counts. Beyond the top four, there is still likely to be a lot of volatility as the teams tend to be reliant on a few high placers and therefore are vulnerable to upsets . . . or benefit from sleepers emerging over the season’s second half.
I had three rankings related resolutions this year:
1- Get these out before the All Class rankings were updated . . . oops;
2- Not to overexplain the rankings . . . oops;
3- And I forget the third one, so I will count this as a win.
