Think we can all agree that the line is draw after Staunton River, Mountain View and St. Chris. It’s them and then everyone else right now. SR may have more top ranked kids in their lineup but Mountain View has more depth than any team in the state. St. Chris has been the most consistent team out of the 3. Without true H2H it’s always going to be these conversations unfortunately. So we just have to trust our eyes and what the results tell us. Hopefully we can get full teams at duals and tournaments so we can figure this out. I see Mountain View is sending their B team to old dominion. Why not send your A team as well for the open quad spot against SR NK and LB?

Why not send your A team as well for the open quad spot against SR NK and LB? They could absolutely get in the quad. I personally don’t think they want to. It all comes down to match ups. I think Mt view matches up better than St Chris does with Staunton River. Beating Great Bridge is not impressive this year. Others might be deeper but if your best kids match up vs Staunton River I think you are done. I would say they have 4 -5 kids neither team can beat and another 2-3 that would be the favorite or a toss up at worst.

Yeah, its weird that Mountain View does not have anything schedule that Saturday but maybe they are resting since they are in NJ for a day tournament than turning around to have the battle of the bridge Friday & Saturday.

So are we just ignoring St Chris in this "top two teams in the state conversation"? I think the margin is razor thing between the three teams. STC just DOMINATED NC powerhouse Union Pines and the all-mighty Great Bridge!!! I will pay for the venue to host these three teams +1 in a quad before the end of season. I would say the same thing. I believe there is an open spot for the quad. St Chris or Mt View need to step up to the plate.

I agree Strasburg looked tough, but as mentioned elsewhere, the numbers are a bit skewed in their favor due to injuries and kids that wrestled at Beast taking the weekend off. The top three teams were clear both days, but I believe Woodgrove and PVI were missing a significant number of points had they wrestled with all their top varsity kids. Woodgrove is solid and I believe had their entire starting lineup in the event with the exception of Cameron Owens (injury). They should be in the running for a 4a team title. With that being said they got beat by Strasberg straight up and had every opportunity to win the tournament but couldn’t get it done in the finals (1-3). Going to be a fun team race in 4a with them Eastern View, Orange and I would even throw in Loudoun County to that mix.

First and foremost...I hope everyone enjoyed some much deserved downtime with friends and families for the Holidays. Every wrestler across the nation is celebrating after Santa brought them +1lb allowance for the next two months... A relatively quite week with just a few in state event: Toys for Tots, Agie Skeens(Grundy), King of the Rock, and Big Orange. - Grundy lapped the field at their home event hosting teams from VA, NC, WV, and KY. They won by a commanding 82.5 points and 9 of 14 champions. - Strasburg won a tight team race at King of the Rock. Honestly, to me this is relatively surprising...I don't know too much about their team, but for a 2A school to come into town and win an event that is typically dominated by the large schools of NOVA has certainly caught my attention. I'll be sure to keep an eye on this team for the remainder of the season. - Lord Botetourt won the Big Orange event which was mainly 1-3A schools. Here is name to keep an eye on... Aidan Armbrust from LCA. The sophomore is 15-0 and every time I've seen him compete he dominates. I think this kid could make some noise on the national scene one day. -Ocean Lakes won their home event in the Toys for Tots event. Being a beach boy myself, I can't say I'm surprised. Coach Barnhart does a great job with this team. I am very impressed with their middle weights. I looked into this event a bit deeper as I think this was the most competitive event leading up to the Holidays... - I was very impressed with Kellam here. Fourth place with really most of their starters out. I think they win this event by a landslide with their A team. They handled OL a few weeks ago in a dual. Mike Benzel is the GOAT. Not up for debate (ONCE A KNIGHT!!!)
- I was a bit disappointed to see some some no shows at 106. Zander Brewer and Hayden Barber could've made this weight a whole different ball game...But it is early in the season. Load management is important and I know kids get a little dinged up. Royce Wezler is an impressive freshman who I look forward to challenging for a state title in a DEEP 6A 106.
- Independence HS opened in 2019 and their school had their first state championship team in any sport this year (Field Hockey). Call me crazy...I think the wrestling team could make it #2...Coach Paul Grinups has officially entered the chat for my coach of the year poll...
For those following here are my current candidates for Coach of the Year - Patrick Shuler - Grassfield
- Steve Steigler - Orange County
- Paul Grinups - Independence
Now...lets not overlook the out of state stuff... Saint Christopher's and Great Bridge traveled NC for the Tiger Holiday Classic. STC beat everyone up w/ 6 champs. They beat NC powerhouse Union pines by over 50 points and defending 4A champs Great Bridge by almost 100...
Really hope we see STC and Staunton River go H2H this season. They are undoubtedly two of the best teams in the State...
Lets get your predictions for Team State Champs in 1-6 and VISAA! Paul Grinups is the truth. He has his boys wrestling lights out currently and Independence should 100% be in the mix for a team title in 5a. It’s an exciting time in Loudoun County for wrestling with 3 teams with legit shots at coming home with a team state title. I could be wrong but I don’t believe any of the county schools have a wrestling state title to their name. Maybe that changes come February.

Many teams are beat up this time of year. Strasburg is no different as they had kids out of the line up also at King of the Rock.

It's a fun debate guessing whether or not any of these teams can beat them in a dual.
In a tournament, SR is undoubtedly the best team in the state. In a dual? That brings a little more debate to the table.
Let me start off answering this question with another question, is this Staunton River team levels ahead of what New Kent was from 2019-2022?
Let's assume you're unbiased and say no, they're about even. Two teams in Virginia did manage to beat them in a dual over that span of time by being average/strong where New Kent struggled.
You see the names Staunton River has an think it's an impossible task, but let's see when they dual. What happens if New Kent pins at 106, 113, 120, 215, 285? (All very possible) Then, Ayala beats Manning? Can't bump Martin out of 26, because then Stamper wins. So then you have 8 matches where you have to score 33 points. Does Saavedra pin Cuic? Does Barnes pin their 57? What happens if New Kent gets away from Nininger at 144 and wrestles Hatcher? That's not a guaranteed win for Hatcher. If he loses then you're looking at having to score 36 points in 7 matches. Uh oh.
That being said.. Staunton River will surely be the favorite for that dual. I'm just offering perspective on how stuff can, and does happen.

Great breakdown on the dual on 1/6. Too bad it's just a Tri-meet.
The 2019-2022 NK teams lost to 4 VA teams in that time span
St Christophers, Great Bridge, Oscar Smith, and Skyline
This weekly summary is awesome thank you for the hard work.

Completely forgot about Oscar Smith, they were rocking back then and had a few D1 guys.
Didn't know about St. Chris, at all.
Even Christiansburg had setbacks in their glory days. I remember them losing to Brentsville on a tiebreaker once upon a time.
Two things are for certain, it's hard to get by unscathed, and I'm getting old.

Honestly,
Oscar Smith beat us at the VA Duals but then at full strength we beat them by we beat them at the Power 5 duals 48-21. I do miss wrestling at the Sheppard Street Gym in Richmond (the old Benedictine School). It's an awesome old school venue.
St Chris did a brilliant move with Turley we couldn't counter in 2019. Awesome move.
I feel old too lol...I'm teaching kids at NK who I also taught their mom and dads.

I have Saavedra wining by decision. I do think Barnes pins their 57. A dual is just fun. Tournament I don’t bring up because then I think it’s not even a debate. I am prettty new to the state so honestly can’t respond to how good New Kent was. Will just have to take your word for it. This is my break down vs MT View. Not New Kent.
