First and foremost...I hope everyone enjoyed some much deserved downtime with friends and families for the Holidays. Every wrestler across the nation is celebrating after Santa brought them +1lb allowance for the next two months...
A relatively quite week with just a few in state event: Toys for Tots, Agie Skeens(Grundy), King of the Rock, and Big Orange.
-Grundy lapped the field at their home event hosting teams from VA, NC, WV, and KY. They won by a commanding 82.5 points and 9 of 14 champions.
-Strasburg won a tight team race at King of the Rock. Honestly, to me this is relatively surprising...I don't know too much about their team, but for a 2A school to come into town and win an event that is typically dominated by the large schools of NOVA has certainly caught my attention. I'll be sure to keep an eye on this team for the remainder of the season.
-Lord Botetourt won the Big Orange event which was mainly 1-3A schools. Here is name to keep an eye on...Aidan Armbrust from LCA. The sophomore is 15-0 and every time I've seen him compete he dominates. I think this kid could make some noise on the national scene one day.
-Ocean Lakes won their home event in the Toys for Tots event. Being a beach boy myself, I can't say I'm surprised. Coach Barnhart does a great job with this team. I am very impressed with their middle weights. I looked into this event a bit deeper as I think this was the most competitive event leading up to the Holidays...
For those following here are my current candidates for Coach of the Year
Now...lets not overlook the out of state stuff...
Saint Christopher's and Great Bridge traveled NC for the Tiger Holiday Classic. STC beat everyone up w/ 6 champs. They beat NC powerhouse Union pines by over 50 points and defending 4A champs Great Bridge by almost 100...
Really hope we see STC and Staunton River go H2H this season. They are undoubtedly two of the best teams in the State...
Lets get your predictions for Team State Champs in 1-6 and VISAA!

- I was very impressed with Kellam here. Fourth place with really most of their starters out. I think they win this event by a landslide with their A team. They handled OL a few weeks ago in a dual. Mike Benzel is the GOAT. Not up for debate (ONCE A KNIGHT!!!)
- I was a bit disappointed to see some some no shows at 106. Zander Brewer and Hayden Barber could've made this weight a whole different ball game...But it is early in the season. Load management is important and I know kids get a little dinged up. Royce Wezler is an impressive freshman who I look forward to challenging for a state title in a DEEP 6A 106.
- Independence HS opened in 2019 and their school had their first state championship team in any sport this year (Field Hockey). Call me crazy...I think the wrestling team could make it #2...Coach Paul Grinups has officially entered the chat for my coach of the year poll...
For those following here are my current candidates for Coach of the Year
- Patrick Shuler - Grassfield
- Steve Steigler - Orange County
- Paul Grinups - Independence
