Greetings 5A wrestling fans and welcome to the 2023-24 season. There have been a lot of changes due to the latest VHSL realignment as this year’s state tournament will look vastly different than years past. There are 5 “Top 15” teams from last season that are no longer in 5A (Mt. View, Brooke Point, Woodgrove, Deep Run and Glen Allen). Defending 4A State Champion Great Bridge has made the move up to 5A. 2023 “Top 15” 6A schools Ocean Lakes and Kellam have also been realigned to 5A. With all of these changes (plus more) there will be a lot of new faces on the 5A podium this year.
The preliminary 5A rankings are taking the VHSL realignment into account, however it is very possible that I left off a name or two that belongs on the list below. If there is a name that belongs based upon criteria (i.e. prior state placer, stud that moved into area, etc) please let me know. Also, these are best guesses on some of the weights. Some wrestlers are keeping their weight down for “Beast of the East” with the intent of moving up for season competition and some are not yet able to wrestler at the minimum weight they certified for in Trackwrestling. Just keep in mind weight changes will move in both directions as we approach January. Lastly, I have ranked a minimum of 4 wrestlers per weight class. More loaded weight classes may have 6 wrestlers ranked.
Note: If they are not certified in Trackwrestling they are not ranked.
