With weight certifications submitted and the season starting this week, here are the final "Official Unofficial" preseason rankings for VA6A. Two quick notes:
1. Weights are assigned under the basic "Eligibility minus one class rule." Obviously, until competitions start, these remain somewhat speculative. But given that in December many wrestlers will compete a weight class up of where they'll be at States, and some wrestlers will move up over the course of the season as they grow, this is as good a guess as exists until the brackets for Regionals/States actually come out. (One exception: Wrestlers "eligible" at 215 who didn't actually compete at 190lbs last season are kept at 215 here)
2. After posting rankings last month that excluded freshman, I had a friendly debate with a fellow coach/ranker/wrestling dad about how to compare VAWA 14U competitors with high school regional placers. Although we didn't come to an agreement, this led me to actually do some research, and I found that in the past five years (2019-2023) only 33 of 420 State placers were freshmen, or about 6-7 state placers per year. However, with frightening consistency (but not entirely surprisingly) 3 freshmen have placed every year since 2019 at 106lbs, so in all other weight classes that means only 18 of 390 placers have been freshmen (less than 5%, or 3-4/seaon). Now, granted, this is still a relatively small "n", and for predictive purposes it would probably be more useful to see how all 14U placers do their freshman year. But I still thought this was interesting enough to share as a long-winded route to saying "don't worry, more freshmen will be ranked when these are updated after the holidays." To the rankings . . .
106 lbs
1. Caden Smith, Robinson (Sr.)
2. Carter Shin, Chantilly (So.)
3. Basleale Mulugeta, Washington-Liberty (Sr.)
4. Brandon Cynar, Western Branch (So.)
5. Jonathan French, Thomas Jefferson (Jr.)
6. Cash Crosby, Gainesville (So.)
Honorable Mention: Okay, if we assume that 3 freshman will place here this season, we should probably keep an eye on VAWA 16U Champ Payton Van Hoven (Mountain View), VAWA 14U runner up (and 2nd at the NC Super 32 and I-64 Fall Classic) Royce Wetzler (Cosby), and VAWA 16U placer Ben Viola (Western Branch). 14U VAWA Champ Michael Santos (Chantilly) is also certified for 106lbs, but with Shin returning, will reportedly bump up to 113lbs.
113 lbs
1. Logan Katz, Battlefield (So.)
2. David Dight, Edison (So.)
3. Cambyses Khani, Yorktown (So.)
4. Erik Gavares, Freedom-SR (Jr.)
5. Mason Lim, Centreville (So.)
6. Tyler Gutschmidt, Colgan (So.)
HM: Ryan Saunders (Battlefield) won Region 6B and came a win away from placing in 6A States last season, and would be ranked 3rd if Katz goes 120; Shan Kolb (Edison) missed the 2023 postseason due to injury, but was 3rd in Region 6C in 2022, 2nd at last year's Pat Dulaney Invitational, and would rank 4th if Dight bumps up.
Note: Battlefield, Edison, Yorktown, Freedom-South Riding, and Colgan are all signed up for the NOVA Classic this weekend, so there could be some interesting head-to-head matchups at this weight.
120 lbs
1. Ezekiel Keel, Chantilly (Jr.)
2. Benjamin Levy, George C. Marshall (Sr.)
3. Darren Hicks, West Springfield (Sr.)
4. James Ligard, Grassfield (Fr.)
5. Sean Goffigan, Woodbridge (Sr.)
6. Dylan Hagen, Robinson (So.)
Note: If they are the ones to bump up a weight, Saunders (Battlefield) would rank 4th here, and Kolb (Edison) would be 6th behind Ligard.
126lbs
1. Jerry Simon, Deep Run (Sr.)
2. Eli Cramer, Cosby (Sr.)
3. Nicholas Sanders, Mountain View (Sr.)
4. Brendan Sholders, Westfield (Jr.)
5. Chase Beltz, Brooke Point (Jr.)
6. Ben Rubin, Thomas Jefferson (Sr.)
Note: Maybe I'm old fashioned -- my knees tell me I'm definitely old after every practice -- but being a four-time state champ used to be a VERY big deal, and yet there seems to be very little discussion of Eli Cramer possibly reaching this milestone this year. (Is it is because he hasn't had as much regional/national level success as some other VA wrestlers? Or are VA wrestling fans just jaded?) That being said, until he avenges his two losses to Simon from last season, he comes in at #2 for now as Deep Run moves up to 6A. Also, with Ben Rubin apparently staying at 126lbs (he had registered for Super 32 at 132lbs), this weight class has three returning/former state champs competing.
HM- John Stottlemyer (Glen Allen) was regional champ and one match away from placing in 5A States last year.
132lbs
1. Tristan Corbin, Robinson (Sr.)
2. Hayato Otero, Landstown (Jr.)
3. Carson Easlick, Westfield (So.)
4. Geoff Whelan, Mountain View (Sr.)
5. Nick Moore, Grassfield (So.)
6. Aiden Sanders, South Lakes (Jr.)
Note: Twin brothers Nick and Nate Moore have transferred to Grassfield from Caesar Rodney, where they finished 2nd at 120 and 4th at 132 respectively. This raises the question of how to value a Delaware state placing versus VHSL 6A without being a complete homer. (Although both had strong showings at the I-64 Fall Classic, finishing 4th at 132 and 2nd at 138, neither wrestled any 6A wrestlers of note for direct comparisons). Lacking any head-to-head results for a firmer comparison, for now I’m simply putting Nick behind the VA state placers and ahead of the non-placers, while for Nate . . .
138lbs
1. Tyler Traves, Mountain View (So.)
2. Nathan Moore, Grassfield (So.)
3. Benjamin Aguilar, Brooke Point (So.)
4. Matthew Arndt, Battlefield (So.)
5. Stefan Hernandez, Centreville (Sr.)
6. Steven Stotler, Woodbridge (Sr.)
Note: . . . . Nate Moore actually has a head-to-head win against Stotler from last season’s War on the Shore. He also has one win over Great Bridge's 5A State Champ Myron Nixon at the I-64 Fall Classic (overall he is 1-2 against Nixon) and 3A 4th place finisher Jesse Miller, so I'm treating his 4th in DIAA as superceding Aguilar and Arndt's 5th place finishes in VHSL.
HM: Carter Harris (Battlefield) won Region 6B and was one match away from placing last season, would rank 5th behind Hernandez if Arndt bumps up.
144lbs
1. Jayden Loveranes, South Lakes (Sr.)
2. Matox Allen, Grassfield (Sr.)
3. Michael Phoutasen, Landstown (Jr.)
4. Matt Gashi-Brito, Fairfax (Sr.)
5. Adonis Iparraguire, Chantilly (Jr.)
6. Cael Sandberg, Colonial Forge (Sr.)
Note: Forget what I said last month. Assuming Traves stays at 138, this is an interestingly competitive weight class, with four returning state placers, no returning champ, and three wrestlers who came a match away from placing last season (Iparraguire, Sandberg, and William Etu, Stafford; actually, if Harris bumps up, it will be four; and Harris would rank 5th behind Gashi-Brito).
150lbs
1. Chase Van Hoven, Brooke Point (Jr.)
2. Benjamin Meinert, Mountain View (Sr.)
3. Brady Calderwood, Herndon (Sr.)
4. Monte Sanchez, CD Hylton (Sr.)
5. Jeremiah SeGraves, West Potomac (Jr.)
6. Alek Martinez, Oakton (Sr.)
HM: Dominic Castrejon, Mountain View (would be 4th w/o Meinert); Brandon Kiraly, Mountain View (would be 6th w/o Meinert or Castrejon); Mountain View also has VAWA 16U runner up Dustin Kohn eligible here, so that must be one helluva round robin in the practice room.
Note: Although Van Hoven won Journeymen and competed in National S32 at 138, he listed as "eligible" at 157 and hence certified at 150lbs. Yet while this seems like a large bump, yes, he is good enough he is still the clear favorite even up two weight classes.
Missing In Action: Christopher Hamm is on Woodbridge’s roster, but hasn’t been certified as of 11/29. His last weigh in was at 152lbs for the Commonwealth Games, and would be ranked 6th if certified.
157lbs
1. Benjamin Weader, Chantilly (Jr.)
2. Elijah Beltran, Mountain View (Sr.)
3. Robert Ronsckvitz, Langley (Jr.)
4. Jake Brubaker, Westfield (So.)
5. Mateo Torres, W.T. Woodson (Sr.)
6. Khangal Dulguun, Washington-Liberty (Sr.)
HM: Blake Jones (Mountain View) placed 6th in 5A States last season, and would be ranked 4th if Beltran doesn't start.
Note: I believe Ronsckvitz is certified to wrestle at 150lbs, but since he placed in 6A States at 157 and didn’t wrestle at 150 during the offseason I’m keeping him up here.
165lbs
1. Nana Utseya, Glen Allen (Jr.)
2. Gabriel Cortes, Mountain View (Sr.)
3. Augustus Fleming, Brooke Point (Sr.)
4. Shane Givens, Highland Springs (Jr.)
5. Ryan Gioffre, Battlefield (Sr.)
6. Jacob Charlesworth, Lake Braddock (Sr.)
NOTE: For some reason, Charlesworth is listed as certified as being eligible to compete at 120lbs this season. Given that he competed in Super 32 at 165, this is either: a) some sort of clerical error, or b) part of his vision quest to wrestle Ezekiel Keel . . . I’m guessing (a) and thus ranking him here at 165.
175lbs
1. Corey Bell, Mountain View (Sr.)
2. Lucas Matheny, Lake Braddock (Sr.)
3. Ethan Osburn, Hayfield (Jr.)
4. Alex Klos, Battlefield (Jr.)
5. Brendan Partridge, Westfield (Sr.)
6. Nicholas Rosado, Glen Allen (Sr.)
NOTE: Although Osburn didn’t make 6A States last season (finishing 5th in Region 6C), he has since won VAWA Cadet Freestyle and earned head-to-head wins over Klos (VAWA Freestyle) and Partridge (Melee to Midnight).
MIA: Dalton Thayer, Cosby (Sr.), was a match away from placing in 6A States last season, but isn’t currently listed on any VHSL roster.
190lbs
1. Harry Maltese, Fairfax (So.)
2. Jon DeMarco, Gainesville (Sr.)
3. Ryan Matheny, Lake Braddock (Sr.)
4. William Lewey, McLean (Jr.)
5. Telmuun Bayambajargal, Yorktown (Sr.)
6. Dominick Goff, Potomac (Sr.)
NOTE: Ethan Lebkisher (Marshall) and Matthew Aleman (Cosby) both certified to wrestle 190, but wrestled 215 last season so will be ranked there. Otherwise, with only three state qualifiers returning (plus Matheny who missed the postseason but beat Lewey at 2022 NOVA), expect some fresh faces to make an impact here.
215lbs
1. Trent Pane, Lake Braddock (Jr.)
2. Sean Pena, Centreville (Sr.)
3. Temuulen Myagmarjargal, Freedom-SR (Jr.)
4. Edgar Lagos Flores, John Lewis (Sr.)
5. Abdul Mosawir Nasratyar, Gar-Field (Sr.)
6. Ethan Lebkisher, Marshall (Jr.)
NOTE: Matthew Aleman (Cosby) arguably could be ranked as high as 3rd based on his 2nd place finish in Region 6A last year, but: Ethan Lebkisher (Marshall) and Edgar Lagos Flores (who was a win away from placing) beat Aleman at States; John Drury (McLean) beat Lebkisher in their only meeting last season; Myarmarjargal (in a dual), Rafael Pena of W.T. Woodson (NOVA Classic) and Nasratyar (at Melee to Midnight) all beat Drury . . . so in other words, after the two returning State placers at the top, this class is clear as mud, and an argument could be made for almost any ordering of 3-6 . . . or places 3-8 for that matter.
285lbs
1. James Bland, Cosby (Jr.)
2. Naasir Edmonds, Landstown (Sr.)
3. Clay Bachman, Mountain View (Sr.)
4. Soren Pirhoun, George C. Marshall (Sr.)
5. Joseph Lubinskas, Battlefield (Sr.)
6. Christopher Funches, Grassfield (So.)
Note: Bachman and Lubinskas are on their team’s rosters, but haven’t been certified yet. However, I’m assuming this is delayed because of football, so am including them in these rankings.
TEAM
1. Mountain View, 81pts
2. Chantilly, 42
3. Battlefield, 36
4. Lake Braddock, 35
5t. Brooke Point, 34
5t. Grassfield, 34
7. Robinson, 31
8t. Cosby, 28
8t. Landstown, 28
10. Westfield, 25
Note: Mountain View is clearly the top team by a large margin, but there could be a tight race for second at Virginia Beach. Battlefield will likely move up in the next rankings as their situations at 113/120 and 138/144 become clearer.
Okay, that's a lot. I'll try to update and expand these around New Year's after we've had a month of competition to digest. Best of luck to all wrestlers, coaches, and parents this season!
