Winter Youth FOLKSTYLE WRESTLING 2023/2024
Registration Link
We are excited to get back on the mat and begin our 2023-2024 folkstyle wrestling season. This year the first practice will be held on November 14th. The season will go through the VAWA Youth State Tournament on February 24th-25th, 2024. Our practice facility is located in the Beirne B. Carter Wrestling Gym on St. Christopher’s campus on the second floor inside the Kemper Athletic Facility, 711 St. Christopher's Road Richmond, VA 23225. Practice times are from 5:45pm to 7:15pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Cost for the winter session is $275.
RWC’s winter youth wrestling is geared towards elementary through 8th grade. Our mission is to provide a healthy learning environment for youth wrestling but also expose our athletes to the structure and workout expectations of our elite wrestling program. Our coaching staff has amassed a vast array of knowledge at all levels of the sport, and are excited to spread that wealth back to the youth in our community.
RWC is a USA Wrestling sanctioned club, and all athletes must purchase a USA Wrestling Insurance Card, which not only protects you in case of injury at practice, but also allows the athletes to compete in the sanctioned events on our schedule. Practices and events are listed on our calendar, but besides a few circumstances, practices are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and events are on either Saturday or Sunday.
The focus of the RWC Youth Winter session is to continue to build on the fundamentals of wrestling that were taught in previous sessions of the club, as well as to cultivate a love of the sport of wrestling within each and every athlete. Practices are uniquely designed to teach these skills through the use of drills, live wrestling, and wrestling specific games. While there will be opportunities for competition, athletes at this age are encouraged, but not required to compete. Competition readiness will be determined by the parents and coaches on an athlete by athlete basis.
Larry Allen and Travers Clemons will serve as the youth wrestling club coaches. They will be assisted by all RWC and St. Christopher's coaches as well as members from the HS RWC team. A USA Wrestling Card is required for all participants and can be purchased at the USA Wrestling Membership site There is a sibling discount of $50: Child #1 is full price with all additional children getting a $50 discount. Please email Tommy Owen with any questions.
