I think the high school weight classes needs one lighter than 106; I know of at least 12 kids repeating 8th grade because they will be too small.
If you look at the 8th grade weight classes there are plenty of kids who weigh 70-85 lbs. No way are these kids going to be competitive their 1st, and maybe their 2nd year, of HS.

We had 15 weight classes (one was 96lbs, I think its 99 now). I was really confused when I came down to VA and saw only 14. A big problem for 99 lbs is how many schools will actually fill these spots. While I feel for those kids who are really small (I've had several kids come in below 100), I think you'd see more holes than filled. Now I do beleive in NYS, 7th and 8th graders are allowed to wrestle varstiy and many of those students occupy the 99lb weight class. If you opened it up, you'd see more filled up.

My son was 106 last year, he had maybe 1/2 of the matches the other kids got during duel nights. His bracket for most tournaments was significantly smaller than other weights most weeks. I don't think adding a 99 lb class is helping anyone.

My experience is the more competitive the team, conference, tournament, the most likely they are to have all the weights filled; and good kids at that weight. I grew up in Cleveland, I don't remember a forfeit, St Eds and the teams they wrestle don't have forfeits. VA isn't getting on the map unless we start to create the right environment.

Good point, we never saw forfeits either

It wasn't like this where I grew up in the midwest either, but full teams in my part of VA are very few and far between, especially 3A and down. We already have 6 classes, if you cut that down to 3, adding a 99 lb class makes much more sense. a 99 lb class from 1A to 6A is going to water it down even more imo.

As an Ohioan myself, you are talking about a wrestling hotbed in the country. The Cleveland area has always had stellar wrestling. Compound that with the opportunity private schools have to give scholarships, it makes sense that there would be fewer forfeits in the lower weight classes for St Eds and the like. That wasn't the case for much of Ohio, especially in the southern portion of the state. While most teams had a lineup close to full, there were several teams which were severely under the 14 weight class limit. As a whole, there weren't as many forfeits in Ohio as there are in Virginia now, but the north of the state, particularly in the private school arena, is not a good guage of the rest of the state. My freshman year, I was one of 6 wrestlers on my team.

Some teams are having trouble finding a 106 and ppl want to add a 99lb weight? Not every team has a Paden Alyea lol would be nice but that’s just not the norm. I’d rather see another upper weight class than 99lb personally. Because in our area we eat really good and it’s difficult to find a 99lb kid lol
