Why isn't UVA better at wrestling? Seem to underachieve year in and year out. Totally whiff on in-state guys every year.

Fair question. Good academics, nice campus - just no real history of success. They have relatively few AAs and are never contending at the NCAAs. Recruits seem decent - but not sure whether they really grow there. If they had a real commitment to success, they would have made a coaching change a while ago. At the end of the day, the results would suggest a need for change. As far as recruiting - they need to continue to chase the kids that are going to NC St., Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and some of the other 2nd tier programs. Probably not going to compete for the first tier kids going to PSU, Iowa, Michigan, Cornell, Ohio St., etc. any time soon.
Not a knock on Garland, bust sometimes a change is needed for everyone's benefit.

9 All-Americans in17 years with a fully funded scholarship wrestling program. Prior to his arrival there were 9 All-Americans from UVA. The difference being that the original 9 AA’s were from programs that were not fully funded and did not have the facilities that Garland has. This is not to say that Garland has the optimal facilities, but he has facilities that are above average or better. “Going to UVA under Garland was the worst decision I ever made- he made me weak” is a quote from a former #1 national recruit who NEVER AA’d at UVA.Enough of the academics excuse- Cornell, Michigan, Stanford, Penn, etc… all have had more AA’s in 17 years and are BETTER academic schools. UVA doesn’t care about wrestling because if they did Garland should have been fired or be fired.

I wonder how much the AD and general UVA fan base cares about wrestling results? On the one hand, seems like the kind of place where as long as they stay out of trouble, graduate, have the occasional AA that Garland's job is safe.
On the other hand, UVA is very successful in many other non-revenue sports, so seems like they actually do care about things besides basketball and football. Not that they are very good in football.
As for whiffing on in state talent, UVA has almost always had a starting line-up heavy with out of state kids. Some top kids in state or out probably haven't had the grades to get in. Overall, I think only two of their AAs ever have been Virginia HS products, Foley and Matyiko. Foley probably wasn't even that high level of a recruit, placing 2nd in AAA as a senior. Matyiko was probably a more elite recruit, only a 1 time state champ but won Junior Nationals IIRC.

After a top 10 recruiting class last year and then a couple of nationally ranked studs this year I think you will be seeing a difference this season. By next season and the following few years ACC championships and top 5 NCAA finishes on the horizon! Watch out ACC here comes UVA

I actually worked for the program for several years and have seen it from the inside. Coach Garland is a good coach and man. The program places the priority on recruiting and producing "good humans". Unlike some of the other D1 schools that are only concerned with talent and recruit monsters, with the hopes of keeping them in-line while on the team, Coach Garland recruits good humans who can handle the strict policies of UVA and the team. This is a good thing (in general, for the athlete). The downside is that it's really rare to find recruits that are both good humans and monsters. Monsters in a program help create monsters around them and if you don't have a lot of monsters in the program, it's not likely to have the monster edge. Hard to be a monster around a bunch of "nice" guys.

I’m sticking to my prediction ACC champs in two years!

Coach Garland courageously gave opportunities to a lot of folks from the South (including Virginia, Georgia, Texas & Florida), and other underserved states (including for a former wrestler from Boise State). There were mixed results, including an NCAA finalist (Jack Mueller). Given the academic pressures of U.Va., arguably he did well while doing good. Those folks have since helped (to varying degrees) revive wrestling in their own states. Coach Garland's contributions were, and remain, much appreciated. Coach Garland seems like a nice fellow, too. Wouldn't it be great if he could persuade U.Va. to add women's wrestling, as well?
