Every year since I've gotten back into VA wrestling I've had said 3a, until this year where I feel like 5a was the toughest. I'm not sure which has the most top end talent as in which team of state champs would win a dual, but.. Riverbend, Brooke Point, Mountain View, Cox, First Colonial, Woodgrove and I may be missing some.. all in the same class (four in the same region) is pretty top shelf right now.
Riverbend smoked the competition at Old Dominion Cup including Skyline in a dual, and beat Staunton River tournament style a few weeks previously to that. Mountain View, who eventually won 5a, took a loss that day, but got healthier since to be able to put up their best lineup for the postseason.
In true old school three classification type feel, the 5a class was (in my opinion) decided before the tournament started when Riverbend lost their returning state finalist at 215 at regionals.. hardly ever works out that way anymore.
I really like the competition and the feel to class 5a right now, and they are the league to overthrow right now.
In 3a, I thought they had a lot going on this year, but Staunton River was the only team to really max out in my opinion. New Kent.. hard to replace all those seniors. Skyline, got too hurt. Brentsville, loads of talent but I don't think they ever got their lineup together the way they wanted to.
It doesn't get any easier for 5a either, btw, with Great Bridge heading that way. Yeeeeeeeesh

All of the classes are top-heavy usually with one kid per weight that could place at Beast, Powerade, Ironman, or Escape the Rock. Less than a third have two such kids. Exceedingly rare are weight classes with 3. So, outside a few scattered match ups, these tournaments are pin fests. Because the tournaments are so watered-down, it's hard to know what to make of the competition at these tournaments.

1A is by far the weakest class. Just for fun I matched up the winners from 1A vs 2A and 1A might win 2 to 4 at most. After the top 2 placers in 1A most wouldn't even qualify for state in any other class. Yes Grundy is decent and they have several transfers that help with depth.

Lets vote for fun and remember that it is for fun only. This really means nothing Judging from the unofficial preseason rankings posted here 6a is the toughest with over 40 kids ranked. 3A had a little over 20 and I think 5a was in the 20s as well. 1,2 and 4 meh

Grayson County couple years back went down to 1A with most of the same team they were runner ups at 2A with and were 4th at 1A. And 30 some points behind the 3rd place team. Losing that year in duals to Grundy, Rural Retreat and Riverheads. As well as Riverheads beat Strasburg twice last year in tournaments. And the the 2nd one was right before post season. And Riverheads hasn’t gotten any closer than 60 some points to Grundy. I will agree the depth isn’t there. But State Champ to State Champ I see 1A winning 7 or 8 of those matches. But a couple would be toss ups.

Wyatt Bush, one of the p4p best kids in the state, and the Buffalo Gap heavyweight last year beating the #1 Heavyweight in all class rankings from Grundy makes me say 1a is just as good as 2a. Maybe not depth, can’t help what teams have for lineups and numbers, but state champ for state champ they’re right there. Riverheads beating Strasburg twice last year, and not even being close to winning 1a is another case for 1a.

I think it’s hard to say. I say 3A is pretty deep as far as wrestlers but overall teams not sure. Don’t see anyone challenging STAUNTON River for state this year or next. Does that mean it’s not the best?
