I just rewatched the match. Cline got 2 takedowns and Long got none. Long got a penalty called for cranking the shoulder then went to the same ride right after that and got called again. I'm pretty sure cranking on the shoulder being illegal was gone over in the coaches meeting on Thursday evening. It looked like one wrestler had a stronger mental game. Long backed up alot because Cline was on his legs. Also, people saying the refs called too many potentially dangerous positions. Really? I thought they did a good job with that overall. No one wants kids to be injured. I been to this tournament for many years and yes there were some bad calls and mistakes, but reffing was better overall then the past few years. Right guy probably won at 157 ultimately..Talk about 175 now. The Union kid was getting hands to the face all day, no call. Glenvar kid went to his corner and got a drink without any ref signaling for injury time or blood time until after the drink. This is a 1 point violation. The ref was clueless and caused a kid a match. Not to mention giving a stalling call in that type of match only on the Union kid. End of story. Do we even want to bring up the 106 finals that got things started? Battle kid was doing everything for almost 4 whole mins. Dominating him. The ref stopped the match 3-4 times and gave a restart for the James River. kid. It was a basic leg and power half. The river kid couldn't take it. It was no where near potentially dangerous. After the "injury time" the Battle kid started working on the other arm. As soon as the River kid was about to get turned, the ref stopped it. River kid layed on his belly the whole time, no stalling. Get outta here with this BS reffing. He allowed the River kid back in the match multiple times and caused another kid a state ring. Lets no bring up the James River celebration....That parent should be banned from the Civiv Center for life. That's classless like the saying goes "flocks of a feather"..

Both 175s were hit with stalling. I do agree with the hands to the face no call though.

106 looked like battle kid was about to end it and saved from pin, but wasn't potentially dangerous. The second time maybe. The 157 was tough, no matter who ran from potter, that's where they wound up. The 175 match looked like the union kids was pushing forward most of the match and firing off shots with no stall on the glenvar kid until late. Both were hit, but hands to the face, the break for the drink, at one point looked like glenvar kid pulled finger, called for a second injury time, then they noticed the other was bleeding from the nose from the jabs, the choice on the restart would've been in union's favor plus the point for drink. Good gritty match
Potentially dangerous were 50/50. It would help if some officials actually got on a mat in a room to see that they're up to date on modern wrestling. Too many attempts to save grundy kid from imminent pinfall x3, and the fact that one grundy ref calling grundy matches? Blair rides not called, backbones with leg in used several times and called once. Shameful there's no accountability for officials. They need to be trained better, not by an open book online test, which happens to certify? Wait until the vhsl one'ups this weekend at the girls tourney and turns out into a crap show too. Girls won't get a fair shake, but I hope they keep plugging away and start using title 9 where applicable. They're putting wrestling on the map again.

Battle kid was riding a shoulder that already had brace. Injury time the shoulder was put back in. Rewatch the match the only thing Almany did was ride a bad shoulder. James River kid is the dominant wrestler. That cradle was smooth.

I rewatched it. Ride a bad shoulder? Battle kid was going after the other shoulder. Lmao. River laid there almost 4 minutes did nothing but let the ref save him.
I wonder how many refs have money riding on these wrestlers like they're race horses?

How did the River kid do nothing for 4 mins? The pinfall was called at 3 mins 43 seconds 🤔

For those Union folks complaining about the 175 match. I just rewatched the match on Flo. I counted the shots for both wrestlers where they got to the legs of their opponent. I counted 6 shots for the Glenvar wrestler and 2 for the Union wrestler. They went out of camera range a few times so can't say what happened. You don't get points for putting out your arm towards the other wrestler. Both wrestlers were active and moving forward so I'd say that was a draw. There were 2 stoppages for blood where the Glenvar wrestler took a drink. You can clearly see the clock counting down time for blood. Nothing wrong there. I did see one time Glenvar did go to the lower face and could have been called for hands to face, but it wasn't called. I'm really not sure how the ref cost the Union wrestler the title in this match. I filled out the bracket before the competition and took Glenvar as the winner and the reason why is that the Union wrestler is great defensively, but not very offensive against good kids. He lost last year in a low scoring match to Glenvar as well. What did I miss?

I was telling some of the 3a guys down there, for better or for worse, there was a lot of passion going on in the 2a mats, and it makes wrestling a lot of fun to be a part of. I like seeing Strasburg and Poquoson because win or lose you're seeing a lot of kids and fanbases who care. Glenvar and Woodstock were on the rise and that really wraps up the teams I was familiar with, but 2a was on the rise this season for sure.

It was indeed a fun tournament. It's great to see so many teams making it close. Just a handful of matches and 2-6 place is a thin split. When the vhsl decides to put emphasis more on the kids and the sport in general, it'll improve. Until then, same crap venue with typical issues at every tournament. Like seeing people get on here and talking it up though. Nice to keep it fresh and give something to look forward to next season.

Why don’t we bring up the 106 celebration? It was glorious. What a way to end a season. A father and son sharing a moment together. Countless hours, practices, and grit to get past a dislocated shoulder. In the match the Battle kid rode his bad shoulder, causing it to dislocate multiple times. Nowhere close to even breaking a 45 to get back points. That alone shows that the River kid was fighting thru the pain and trying not to get pinned. Ref called it once it was actually potentially dangerous, not because of the shrieks of pain on the shoulder. More people need to learn some background info before trying to talk. Congrats to everyone on a great season. Can’t wait to watch it all go down again next year.

Wasn't really here to bash any kids, but the shoulder wasn't dislocated multiple times and wasn't being ridden on. Didn't get past 45 degree because the ref stopped it too early. Not close to potential..River kid did what he needed to do to win the match. Great cradle and battled back tough. So did the Battle kid, he looked like he did enough too depending on who calls that potential or not. This is more along the lines of overall officiating.
All I know is this. If I ever decide to learn how to officiate wrestling, Virginia isn't the place to get the training... I'll travel to NC.

I was at the Civic Center (on the other end from the meeting) when they had the referee meeting last Thursday. It lasted about an hour and I saw them go over many points with actual training on the mat. So to say there was no training is not valid. The past few years there have been issues with getting enough reffs as about every other company, business, government has had as well. Everyone needs workers and more skilled workers. Until some of the experts on here start applying to ref the best selected for state may not be as good as they could be.
