I'm Coach Waters all I will say that the team I was handed, the studs had all graduated. Not one returner even had placed the year before.
Regarding Shreve he wrestled all season starting in January, he was at 285 weight class weighing only 228. I convinced him to drop to 220 for 2 reasons, 1. he couldn't beat our hwt and 2. he was just undersized. So he won some at hwt but he was on the mat, the statement that he only wrestled a few matches is not accurate at all.
He beat the Hargrave kid a week earlier.
I'm not going to ever dignify the other mess about if Fishburne didn't have this or that. I feel the kids trained as hard as anyone in the state and represented well when it counted.
Why anyone would try and take or say if regarding a kid peaking at the right time is beyond me.
Plain and simple RJ brought it like we told him he could.
I'm not going to put any program down or say what was did in the past. We here at Fishburne have surpassed anything done in the past with hard work. I had a former Caisson who won a state title his senior yr now coaching in the beach area come up and tell me we were good, but you guys are way better then we were. I just said thank you. I'm never gonna put kid down, win lose or draw.
As for the officiating, it was shall I say in a nice way poor. Shreve almost lost that quarter because of the reff mis applying a rule that had been changed 4 years prior. I planned to protest it because you couldn't tell him anything it was sad. Luckily we got the pin. later that night the head ref came to me and told me Terry you were right. After being a official for 35 years, I knew it, but I could not believe officials would be calling a state tournament and not know that rule.
I'm a PA guy and I think for VA to get better, the officials have some ownership in it too.
I love this sport to much to put a kid down or say IF.
Keep on wrestling!
Everyone have a great off season.
