Proper big match celebration- Look at your parents, Point at them, Flex, say I love you, run to center and shake opponents hand, run and hug your coaches and teammates. What if you arent sure who your parents are? Any other recommendations on places to point?

I wish I could say I was surprised, but I’m not. Yesterday, at the Commonwealth District Tournament, Riverbend’s 165 demonstrated extreme arrogance, and downright deplorable behavior. He intentionally tried to hurt his opponent. Then, when he finally did, he got up and gestured to his team and fans that it was over with a “strapped” gesture. He had no punishment, wasn’t penalized, and showed no remorse. He never apologized, and seemed happy about doing it. After the match, the referee admitted he should have hit him for unsportsmanlike conduct. A lot of good that does after the match. Kid is a senior, and was wrestling a freshman. It was simply disgusting behavior. And, it wasn’t like he should have been so arrogant anyway. It was the consolation bracket. Karma came around a little though, he got pinned the very next match, and the kid went to the doctor and it was only a hyperextension. Coaches need to do better. Our wrestlers are a direct reflection of us. If we allow those behaviors, teenagers wiill act. If we do not tolerate it, we can teach them valuable lessons. Riverbend…do better. Are you sure he wasn't disciplined? I didn't personally see it and was informed later... it was definitely addressed after, you can be sure. You never know what a kid is personally going through, as in this case. You are right, it came right back around the next round with an unexpected loss by pin. If you had been around the last 13 years you would know that we do, do it better. I have always run a respectable program and take responsibility for our athletes and I would have directly taken this to you coach, not typed it anonymously on the internet. Best of luck at Regionals. Roberts

All really good points.
Sports require a level of sportsmanship and aggressiveness that are critical components to wrestling. But; it is interesting how the original post caught so much attention and caused reactions from the throughout the state with examples from poor sportsmanship just this weekend. These examples are telling.
The first post mentioned a college wrestler who had a reputation for acting out during matches. I applaud the referee who disqualified AJ during the Iowa Solider Salute. He won the match, threw a punch and was promptly disqualified. I applaud the ref.
For us proud Virginian athletes, coaches, administrators and parents, we need to do better. If the coaches and or parents are unwilling to discipline these athletes does VHSL have an avenue to sanction them?

Im pretty disappointed in these ADULTS talking about CHILDREN on a forum...ADULTS!!! Let that sink in... and be disappointed in yourselves. The worst part about it...you are too big of a COWARD to put your real name...Using a FAKE email to create your username. People like you dont belong if. If you're going to talk a big game dont use an alias.

If the wrestler throws punches or does other dangerous activity in matches more than one time in their HS career they need to be gone period. There was a college wrestler that was removed from the team this season for trying to hurt another wrestler and had a history of same behavior. He really hurt more than one wrestler. There should be a high standard.

Also, many of these so called children were born in 2005. They would be 19 this year.

Again! So I was not at the 5a regional tournament. I only heard about the 113 from GBHS and his behavior from this forum. But it seems to have happened again!
During the 116lb Championship match at the Virginia Super States the loser of the match threw his head gear at his coach and then pushed the opposition coach instead of shaking his hand. What is going on? A heated rivalry between these two teams or just out of hand behavior?

I am all for rivalry and hard wrestling, but i do not want to see some one get hurt over it.
