106- Darin Witcher beat last years 2a champ Xadin Wynn at Big Orange and it wasn't very competitive. 113- Gavin Hetrick is the real deal...3 matches,3 pins all in the 1st 120-Brayden Forbes of Cave Spring should crack the top 5. 17-0 on the season and looked very impressive at Orange. Hunter Blosser of Turner Ashby teched Dylan Lamar of Heritage who is # 4 in the boards rankings 126- Wayshon Hicks who was thought to be at 144 for the year won Orange here. 144- this weight is becoming very interesting. Peyton Hatcher looks to be going to 150 after wrestling in Beast of the East last weekend. Insert Davis Henritze of Cave spring somewhere below #2. He looked great at Orange winning all 4 matches by pin including Ezekiel Pineda in the finals. 150- equally as interesting. Aiden Overstreet won Ashby easily but insert Angel Rigney into the 150 mix. Rigney finished 3rd at Ashby wrestling at 157 after narrowly losing 5-4 to #3 157 Jake Owens. He entered big Orang at 150 and dominated the tournament pinning two returning state placers Stevie Wood and Gray Arnold in the process. Rigney and Arnold both should crack the top 6 at 150. In my opinion its Hatcher, Rigney, Arnold, Billy Tyler. 157- Elijah Frame won Ashby by medical forfeit after Jake Owens was injured from being thrown by Rigney. Frame was not very impressive and most people were let down by not seeing a Frame Owens rematch. Enter Joel Swanson into the 157 mix. He won Orange easily. 165- give it to Macon now. Piluso won Orange in sudden victory over Matt Mcneil who should also crack the top 6 175- Armbrust defeated Wyatt Neel to win Orange. Armbrust looks huge for this weight but I dont see him beating Josh Kelly. 190- Aiden Ryan beat Keyshawn Morgan 285- Drake Garrison should replace Preston Lonker at #1. Its early in the season but Preston lost Orange to Andrew Brooks and after seeing he and Garrison there is just no comparison.

At 106, Witcher was the 2nd placer at 3A state last season. He has improved. Wynn and Witcher have been training partners for years which can sometimes skew results. At 120, Brayden Forbes is from James River which is a 2A school. He is ranked #2 at 120 in 2A. The kid he beat Cash from Riverheads was ranked #1 in 2A at 113. It probably wasn't as close as the 6 to 3 score. At 165, it was a close match. Mcneil from Liberty is now in 2A. He should be ranked high in 2A. At 150, the match between Rigney and Arnold was very close until Rigney was able to get 2 throws late. I suspect they will have some more wild matches in the future. Stevie Wood from Liberty is now 2A. He needs to control his temper as he almost got DQ'd in consolations.

Wynn needs to figure out how to beat high level guys, but there's no such wrestlers in 2A 106 so I expect Wynn to easily collect his 2nd state title comes February. Brayden Forbes is the real deal. He paid his due wrestling top guys at his club in the summer and fall. Final between Forbes and Dean is a must see.

The bystander said Wynn cut weight unless most kids these days on a previous post? I'm not knocking Wynn. I think he is a good kid and a great wrestler.

Kameron Harrel was a four or five time vawa state champ in youth wrestling and placed third last year as an undersized freshmen at the 2a 106 state tournament. If Dylan Padget is at 106 at States there could be some competitive matches for Wynn.

Just a few follow ups- 150- Do you believe all of those kids are better than Tyler? As in,you listed them in the order you'd place them? 113- have you seen Cline from Brentsville wrestle yet? I have not, but, his results are good and a lot of my "Intel" suggests to me he is the favorite over Hetrick. I ranked Hetrick above based on previous placement. 165- Pilusos performance was underwhelming, however I wouldn't suggest hand the title to Ayers immediately. Another wrestler made it to the exact round at Beast as he did. 175- Armbrust over Neel is no surprise. Think Neel goes up or down? 285- Yeah.. I have a lot of work to do here. Lonkers ranking again was based on previous placement.

I apologize for not being clear about the rankings I was referring to. I wasnt talking about 3a specifically but speaking more to the rankings posted with all divisions. I do believe Hatcher , Rigney, and Arnold should all be ahead of Tyler and I believe it is a toss up between Hatcher and Rigney. Hatcher has the better training partners day in and day out and being pushed by Macon and Noah has to account for something...but Rigney is a freak athlete and according to his track has been wrestling for about 12 years now. He also just has this "it" factor . The finals match at orange was electric and you can just see him feed off the crowd and rise to the moment. Arnold just looks to have all the tools, size, strength, fundamentally sound and to his credit was going move for move with Rigney before being hit with back to back big throws. Hes also a senior. I have not seen Cline but Hetrick is a machine. Piluso just does not seem to have added anything over last year that could push Macon.I dont see any way Neel could get down to 165. He is ultra lean now and even if he did he doesnt have the tools to beat Pilosu or Macon. If he goes up hes not beating Jobber however I would have him #2 in 3a.

His other 2 wins were medical forfeits. Frame pinned both late in the matches however... for context Rigney pinned Mcdaniel inside of 30 seconds the week before at a dual and Hensley was finished inside of a minute in the consolations. Frame just seems to have a very limited game and not one that will fair well against the higher level wrestlers he will face at states.

We can talk and replay match results but all that matters is the final results. I see so many predictions. It’s all about the state meet. Some kids haven’t even placed at states and we make predictions. I watched several local kids at Tryant beat national talent. Example the Armbrust kid lost in overtime to Jesse Adams. 4-2. A month ago. Then Adams beats Flowers 10-3. And Kelly 10-6 this year. None of its matters. These kids have so much pressure on them from day to day it’s hard to say who will show up. The state tournament, bad seeding and all will show the truth. I just hope that all of the VA talent will start doing more freestyle and Greco. That’s where they can make up the difference between states. I feel that Stanton river has really taken advantage of the Freestyle and Greco and it shows. Will be a great state tournament
